EVENTS

Employees of the D epartment DEDEC E. Korotkiy and O. Lysenko, prepared a report by the World Congress on Information and Communications Technology WICT-2011 (11-14 December 2011., Mumbai , India ) on "Hardware Implementation of Link Aggregation in Networks-on-Chip ". Report has been approved by 4 reviewers and included in the technical program of the Congress!
It is planned that after the forum report in the form of an article to be published IEEE.

In December of 2011 Laboratory of Digital Lab is expected to receive within the framework of Universit y Programm from Texas Instruments modules BeagleBoard-xM , having a processor core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8, 800 MHz C64x + DSP processor , graphics accelerator PowerVR SGX530, 512 MB of SDRAM memory and have the wide possibilities for connecting peripherals.

 

Except for it, the receipt of the evaluation module of OMAP35x EVM is expected also, processor of Texas Instruments OMAP3530 built on a base (720 Mhz of ARM Cortex-a8 / 520 Mhz of C64x+ DSP). 256 Mb of LPDDR of RAM have the module, 256 MB NAND Flash ROM, 3,7" touch screen of Vga/qvga, will eat away for connecting of CMOS of chamber, S-video / component / composite / videoentrance and S-video output. On the module also there is 10/100mbps Ethernet, SDIO, I2c, JTAG, instrument room keyboard, USB 2.0 and slot for the cards of Mmc/sd. Connecting of daughter's add-in card of expansion is possible with the off-wire interfaces of WLAN and Bluetooth.

The indicated means will be used both in an educational process at the study of discipline of «System of computer vision» and for an implementation in the laboratory of researches under- and postgraduate students of Department DEDEC in area of the digital processing of images.

Training Center, which works at the Digital Lab of Department DEDEC of NTUU "KPI", holds permanent professional training courses and business schools in the following areas:

Each of the proposed courses consist of theoretical and practical (laboratory) parts. The course lasts for five sessions of 4 hours. The total duration of one course - 20 hours.

Main lines of Laboratory's activities

– training of bachelors, magisters, and specialists ordered by enterprises, with specialization according to the following platforms of “electronic” education:
– organization of workshops for training of the enterprise specialists in contemporary methods and means for designing the devices and systems based on the above platforms;
– fulfillment of projects on a turnkey basis with the use of the following "electronic" platforms:

1. Design of programmable logic ICs of "Altera" company;

  • 2. RISC-microcontrollers of MSP series produced by Texas Instruments;

    3. DSP-processors of families Ñ24õ (F243, LF2407), Ñ28õ (F2812), and Ñ55õ (Ñ5510) produced by Texas Instruments;

    4. AVR RISC-microcontrollers made by Atmel company;

    5. Precise measuring microcontrollers of the MSC12xx family made by Texas Instruments company;

    6. ZigBee wireless technologies in conformity woth IEEE 802.15.4 standard based on Chipcon - Texas Instruments radio-modems;

    7. Development and promotion of WEB-applications.


    The Laboratory includes an official Center of training in the products of the "Altera" company in Ukraine and the training premises for the Texas Instruments and Atmel companies.

    The official Training Center of the Altera company in Ukraine, functioning on the base of the training-and-scientific laboratory of digital technologies at the chair of design of electronic-digital equipment (DEDEC) of the electronics faculty in National Technical University of Ukraine — Kiev Polytechnic Institute (NTUU "KPI") offers the permanently acting courses of training in design of logic integrated circuits of the Altera company on the following topics:

    •  Designing with the Quartus II Software for CPLD
    •  Designing with the NIOS II Processor and SOPC Builder
    •  Introduction to VHDL
    •  Introduction to Verilog HDL
    •  Designing with Cyclone & Cyclone II Devices

    The laboratory practicals must be performed by each student personally in the Quartus II ver. 7.2 medium with the use of NIOS Development Kit Cyclone Edition modules. The learning volume is 20 hours.

    We provide the textbooks issued by the company and adapted by the university lecturers. Upon graduation from the courses the participants will obtain the ALTERA firm certificates.

    THE NAME OF THE BASIC COURSE "Design technology of programmable logic ICs of ALTERA company in QUARTUS II medium"

    Individual courses

    Our laboratory performs teaching specialists of enterprises (and other people interested in the topics) in the issues related to design of digital devices and systems based on the following platforms:

    1. Mocropower RISC microcontrollers, series MSP430, made by Texas Instruments company, in the “Kickstart” integrated design medium.

    2. Single-chip AVR RISC microcontrollers produced by the “Atmel” company, in the “AVR Studio” and/or “IAR Systems” integrated design media.

    3. DSP - processors, families TMS 320 C 24 x, TMS 320 C 28 x, and TMS 320 C 55 x, produced by Texas Instruments, in the “Code Composer Studio” integrated design medium.

    The course of learming may be conducted either individually or in a group — in accordance with the basic (typical) or peculiar program approved by Customer. The studies include mastering the necessary tools in the form of Starter Kits estimation modules.

    The term of learning is 7 to 10 days (depending on the learning curriculum and the level of initial knowledge of the person to be learned).

    During the visit of Warsaw   University of Technology (VUT) delegation to NTUU "KPI", the prof. of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology of the Institute of Electronic Systems, Anatoly Platonov visited the Digital Lab. The capabilities of the laboratory  were presented and the  perspectives of the bilateral scientific cooperation  were discussed.

    By the invitation of   the European   Mission of   the university program   of Texas Instruments the educational and   research laboratory of   digital technology   with the complement of the   20 world DSP- laboratories   participated   in testing of educational   materials  of the new C5000 BETA Test ROM ( based on   the module   C5505 "eZdsp) :

    The research module type DK - VIDEO-4 SGX 230 N is expectated. The Audio Video Development Kit, Stratix® IV GX Edition, delivers a complete video and image processing development environment for design engineers. The kit facilitates the entire design process, from design conception through hardware implementation. This kit includes the Stratix IV EP4SGX230 Audio Video development board, Quartus® II development software, evaluation intellectual property (IP) cores—including the Video and Image Processing Suite—the serial digital interface (SDI) reference design, as well as power supplies, cables and documentation.

    Laboratory received on 9 DE2 modules for use in the educational process of the Department KEVA and in conducting training courses for specialists of enterprises and organizations of Ukraine . The board contains Altera Cyclone ® II 2C35 FPGA, which makes it the ideal tool for the study of digital logic, processor organization and the FPGA.

    Teaching and research laboratory of digital technology (Digital Lab), based on which since 2004 has been successfully operating an official training center company Altera, visit the company's manager for Eastern Europe, Mrs. Margaret Tishler. The presentation of opportunities and resources laboratory, the Center, a demonstration of the original laboratory work based on modules UP2, Nios Development Board (Cyclone Edd.), DE2, teaching materials (lectures, instructions for laboratory work, tutorials), diploma projects and master's theses, using technology from Altera. Agreement on the delivery to the Lab and the Center for additional training facilities DE2 and one of the research modules for graduate students and undergraduates of the Department KEVA.

    Laboratory Digital Technology (Digital Lab) were obtained from Texas Instruments additional learning tools and debugging tools, including the same for all DSP families and MSP430 microcontrollers CAD, as well as modules for handling audio, video, and implementation based on the MSP430 platform with 2.4 GHz radio modems CC2520 Wireless Technology ZigBee:

    The lab of digital technologies (Digitallab) on the basis of which since 2001 the educational laboratory of Texas Instruments successfully works, was visited by the Manager of the University Program of this company Mr. Robert Owen. The presentation of opportunities and resources of lab, demonstration of original laboratory works on platforms Ñ5510, Ñ6437, MSP430FG46x, methodical materials (rates of lectures, instructions to laboratory works, manuals), degree projects and masters theses using DSP and MCU technologies of TI took place. In turn, Mr. R. Owen has stated substantive provisions of realization of the University Program of company TI. The agreement on delivery in lab of additional tools of debugging, including uniform for all processors of TI the IDE Code Composer Studio v.4 (Academic edition), for the sum $3700 is achieved.

    During the autumn semester of the 2009/2100 school-year, the lectures and laboratory works on the following disciplines shall take place for the 6-year masters of DEDEC chair
    :- Designing of “systems-on-chip”,
    - Electronic computational facilities around digital signal processors,
    - Technical vision systems.

    7-8.06.2009
    Four master thesis works have been successfully completed by the 6 th year masters at the laboratory of digital technologies of the digital equipment design chair in NTUU “KPI”. The topics of the works performed are as follows:

    • Fuzzy algorithms for controlling DC commutatorless motors (based on DSP platform, type C24X produced by Texas Instruments);
    • Realization of video signal processing algorithms with the use of a system-on-chip (implemented around the Cyclone II platform produced by Altera company and a module, type DE 2);
    • Realization of audiological procedures based DSP technologies (implemented around DSP TMS 320 VC 5510 produced by Texas Instruments and a module, type DSK C 5510);
    • A measuring system based on DSP-microcontroller, type TMS 320 F 2812 (implemented around a module, type DSK eZdsp F 2812 produced by Texas Instruments);

    The defence was accompanied by practical demonstration of acting pilot prototypes of the algorithmic and circuit decisions proposed. Additional information on the designs may be obtained in the laboratory (building 12, room 339).

    Presentation of the training-and-research laboratory of digital technologies was conducted within the framework of the 7th all-Ukrainian student contest named “Programming of microprogrammed automata and microcontroller systems”. The presentation was arranged for leaders of participant teams of the Olympiad and demonstrated the potentialities and resources of the laboratory.

    Within the framework of joint Korean-Ukrainian project aimed at creation (at NTUU “KPI”) of a modern Center for training in IT-technologies, a meeting of the laboratory employees with technical experts in SoC (System-on-Chip) technologies of the KOICA Korean company was held. The guests familiarized with contemporary SoC and DSP technologies (available at the laboratory) based on the products of well-known companies such as Altera and Texas Instruments (the U.S.A.).

    We inform all potential attendants of the training courses that, beginning from December, 2008, execution of laboratory works during the lessons will be conducted interactively, with the use of a special interactive board produced by Promethean company (Great Britain).

    The Laboratory received at last the debugging module, type TMDSVDP 6437, made by Texas Instruments company. This module makes it possible to deploy in the laboratory the work on practical realization of newly developed algorithms of digital processing of video signals and pattern recognition based on the DaVinci™ Digital Media Processors TMS320DM643x platform.

    The laboratory acquired a kit of estimation modules, type MSP-EXP430FG4618, with MSP-FET430UIF USB-programmer, produced by Texas Instruments, and initiated the work on their testing. The modules are fabricated based on two chips of widely-known 16-bit RISC microcontrollers, type MSP430FG4518 and MSP430F2013. In addition to wide spectrum of outer periphery, the controllers include a socket for connecting external radio-modems, families CC1100, CC1101, CC1150, CC2500, CC2550, & CC2420 (Texas Instruments), useful in various wireless, particularly, ZigBee-compatible applications.

    Based on the above equipment, we are planning to install (by the end of this year) several working places used in the “Peripheral devices” discipline included in the curriculum of the 5th-year for students of DEDEC department at the faculty of electronics.

    The laboratory is involved in mastering of recently obtained 2-MHz USB PC-functional generators, type PCGU 1000, made by Velleman company (USA), with frequency range 0.01 Hz – 2 MHz.

    The laboratory of digital technologies acquired a desk-top milling-and-engraving machine, type Sungraf XS-3 (Russia), which permits to resolve a whole number of design problems, particularly, prompt prototyping of printed-circuit boards.

    The official training Center of ALTERA company in Ukraine obtained the DE2 module, made by ALTERA company, whose main part is a Cyclone II programmable logic IC. The module is designed specially for systems dealing with processing of audio and video signals. The work on testing the module is in progress.

    The laboratory members and lecturers of the department of design of electronic computational equipment at faculty of electronics in NTUU “KPI” issued “The open letter to editorial board of the CHIP News Ukraina” journal”. The letter, published in No.2, 2008, considers some issues of training of high-skilled specialists for electronic industry by the higher school of Ukraine.

    The laboratory prepared and sent to General Motors company (USA) a technical proposal concerning three lines of scientific-technical co-operation in conformity with the extended List of R&D in the sphere of interest of the company (tracking drives based on series C2000 DSP, recognition of speech signals based on series C5000 DSP, and analysis of images and pattern recognition with the use of creative methods).

    A. Antonyuk and A. Lysenko, members of the laboratory, issued an article called “A brief description of architecture of Digital Signal Processor (DSP), type TNS320F2812, Texas Instruments company”. The paper is published in “CHIP News Ukraina” journal, No.1, 2008, and is first in the series of the learning materials on DSP-processor produced by Texas Instruments.

    Beginning from February, 2008, within the framework of the joint project (in co-operation with the GRAND company), we are planning to publish, in the “Chip News Ukraine”, the learning materials on DSP-processors fabricated by Texas Instruments, in the form of two cycles of papers 10 lessons each, covering the following topics:

    – family C28x with DSP-processor TMS320F2812 — 1-2 quarter of 2008.

    – family C55x with DSP-processor TMS320VC5510 — 3-4 quarter of 2008.

    The Laboratory has carried out approbation of the received kits MSC1200EVM of the MSC family produced by Texas Instruments company. The kits are employed in construction of a precise system of measurement of relative air pressure with the use of a pressure sensor, type MPX5010 (made by Motorola) and multicharacter liquid-crystal display 8x2 (made by Bolimin company).

    The Laboratory has developed a ZIG-Bee module whose main part is a radio-transceiver CC2420 (made by the Chipcon company, Norway) and a microcontroller MSP430F149 (Texas Instruments). The device specifications are included in the site.
